During the day, most puppies can be crated for about an hour for every month they are old. If you find yourself busy or at work, you must ask a neighbor or friend for help, since the puppy needs to take care of "business" during the day.A puppy does not learn to control itself in increments. Its done in one fell swoop. You'll just notice one day that your puppy can wait until after breakfast to go out that first time, or suddenly can wake up from a nap and not have to pee immediately. You will make adjustments to puppy's schedule as it matures.

Adolescent/Adult Dog Schedule

You will find out that most puppies are house trained by the time they are 7 to 8 months old. Basically, unless they are sick or hurt, they will not have accidents. None. Nada. Zip. They are not perfect animals, but the lack of accidents has a why. Its perfect housebreaking training built by perfect prevention.

Healthy adolescent and adult dogs usually have the physical ability to hold it for six to eight hours. They may not understand why they should hold it in, or know that they can do so.They learn those skills from their owners, who, through excellent management, set their dogs up for success.

If you take the dog out to many times, you can keep them from learning what to do. Learning how to hold it in is a skill the dog must learn. AYou need to keep on a perfect potty visit time schedule by the time puppy is three months old, which will prevent any accidents from occurring.

Weaning Off the Extra Trips

By the time the dog is 7 months old, most will be dining 2 times per day. They will probably need to eliminate 3 to 5 times each day. If will see your dog get very excited when you use your "Go out" phrase after you have used it for a while. They will run to door, jump around, etc, when you say that phrase.

Experiment with your schedule as your dog gets the idea of holding it and asking to go out. If someone is around to supervise, skip the mid-morning and mid afternoon potty breaks, and see if your dog can get by on three or four potty trips per day.

Toy breeds can take longer to get physical control, and therefore to house-break. Please be patient with smaller dogs as they have smaller kidneys! Also, supervise closely, since you may not "find" the accident easily. You may have to use some creativity, including the possibility of some indoor alternatives.
